POSITION SUMMARY
As the Director of Operations of the Local Journalism Initiative (LJI), you will assist the CEO and play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth and efficient functioning of our organization. You will be responsible for helping develop and drive the organizational strategy; creating and implementing policies and processes; managing organizational culture, HR, facilities, IT, vendors and contracts; and supporting our fractional CFO with financial matters.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Work with CEO to implement organizational strategy:

  • Coordinate strategic planning processes with the CEO, leadership team and board.
  • Drive implementation of organizational strategy through effective and efficient business operations.
  • Create and maintain dashboards and other tools to continuously assess organization’s progress.
  • Lead and oversee internal initiatives to advance strategy, including developing and overseeing budgets and timelines.

Manage Daily Operations & Administration:

  • Assess and address facilities and IT needs, including office space, equipment, and tech support.
  • Assess organizational needs, research and draft policies and procedures, and oversee implementation to maximize operational efficiency.
  • Provide general administrative support including organizing and maintaining file structures, performing data entry, drafting correspondence, and providing other fundamental administrative assistance.

Support Optimal Team Effectiveness:

  • Manage human resources functions in partnership with vendors, including developing and implementing personnel infrastructure and policies (i.e., payroll, benefits, hiring, onboarding and exit processes, performance review). 
  • Assess and address team members’ training and professional development needs.
  • Organize team meetings, social activities, and other initiatives to foster a positive organizational culture.
  • Support CEO in fully engaging board, including coordinating and preparing for board meetings, assisting with board governance and supporting board communications. 

Manage Contracts & Vendors:

  • Draft, oversee, and implement contracts and partnership agreements, including supporting the development director in complying with grant agreements and reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate with vendors, negotiate contracts, and manage vendor relationships to ensure optimal service delivery and cost-effectiveness.

Support Financial, Sales & Marketing Processes:

  • Work with CEO and fractional CFO to facilitate budgeting, tracking expenses, preparing deposits, processing payments, billing, and creating financial reports. 
  • Support CEO in sales management and ensuring client/partner satisfaction. 
  • Support CEO in overseeing implementation of marketing and branding strategies.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 5+ years experience in operations management or a related role, preferably within media, journalism and/or nonprofits
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Management or related field
  • Exceptional project management skills, including strong organizational and multitasking capabilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Tech savvy and familiarity with Google Drive and other collaborative tools.
  • Familiarity with business financial systems, including QuickBooks or similar tools.
  • Knowledge of contract management principles and practices.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced environment.
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to evolving organizational needs.

SALARY & BENEFITS

Compensation: $80,000-$90,000 depending on experience and qualifications

In this role, you will lead our efforts to secure funding, build partnerships, and drive sustainable growth for local journalism initiatives. Your strategic vision and fundraising expertise will be instrumental in advancing our mission to ensure vibrant, independent, and reliable journalism remains a cornerstone of our communities. Job Summary: Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Development is responsible for driving revenue to sustain and grow the Local Journalism Initiative, including Spotlight Delaware, by focusing on the attraction and stewardship of a strong base of sponsors and donors, managing special events, and writing and securing grants.   

Key Functions and Responsibilities

  • In partnership with the CEO and board, build on initial fundraising success to develop and lead a comprehensive, strategic, donor-centered development program to raise $1-2 million a year (and growing) in philanthropic giving. 
  • In partnership with CEO and board, grow and diversify institutional fundraising; prospect, meet with, propose, and close foundation and corporate grants and partnerships. 
  • Develop and nurture relationships with a core group of major donors with whom you meet regularly, and make direct, face-to-face donor solicitations. 
  • Work with Membership and Community Engagement Director to develop and execute strategies for acquisition, stewardship and renewal of members (individual donors); segment donors and research giving capabilities; move members through the funnel to become major donors, where appropriate. 
  • Work with Local Journalism Initiative’s board to spur and coordinate board involvement in fundraising. 
  • Develop and/or oversee production of fundraising communications material, including an annual impact report, a monthly email newsletter, quarterly funder updates, pitch decks, donor correspondence, and other collateral. 
  • Create and execute imaginative and successful fundraising events.   
  • Maintain donor management database. 

Education and Experience Requirements 

  • Minimum of eight years’ experience in fundraising or development work, including demonstrated success soliciting major gifts from both institutions and individuals. 
  • College degree preferred.  
  • Familiarity with fundraising for journalism, democracy, civil society or related issues preferred.

Position Summary: The Reporter will be responsible for working closely with the Editor-In-Chief and other reporters to produce high-quality journalism that explores the impact of public policy on Delaware citizens, particularly focusing on historically underserved communities. Key duties will involve identifying and reporting stories that matter to different communities, participating in investigative projects, developing content for multiple mediums, conducting thorough research and fact-checking, and actively engaging with the audience and local community. In this nontraditional newsroom, the Reporter also will work collaboratively with editorial staff from other news outlets, at the direction of the Editor-in-Chief. Preferred qualifications include strategic thinking, experience in journalism, in-depth knowledge of Delaware’s local news landscape, community/audience engagement and innovative storytelling abilities.

Reporting and Storytelling

  • Work closely with the Editor-In-Chief and other reporters to produce high-quality journalism that examines the impact of public policy on Delaware citizens, with a special focus on historically underserved and underrepresented communities.
  • Analyze and break down complex government policies and public documents into easily digestible and relatable stories for the general public.
  • Participate in investigative journalism projects, applying analytical skills and utilizing various resources to dig deeper into government-related stories and issues.
  • Develop content and stories that can be effectively conveyed across various mediums – print, digital, audio, and visual – ensuring wide reach and engagement.
  • Conduct thorough research, interviews, and fact-checking to ensure accuracy and credibility in all reported pieces.
  • Maintain strong editorial processes and standards to ensure transparency, accountability, and consistency across the newsroom.
  • Regularly review and analyze audience feedback and metrics and engage directly with the community to understand the impact of stories, adapt reporting techniques, and improve future content.

Community Engagement 

  • Host and/or participate in public forums, Q&A sessions, or webinars to directly engage with the audience, answer their queries, and build a stronger relationship between the newsroom and the community.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with local sources, community leaders, and experts to enrich reporting and gain valuable insights.
  • Act as a newsroom representative in covering government-related events, press conferences, and other official functions.
  • Remain flexible, creative, collaborative and entrepreneurial to continuously learn about and respond to community information needs. 

Education and Experience Requirements 

  • Extensive experience in journalism, with a strong emphasis on investigative reporting and producing impactful stories.
  • Experience with or interest in nonprofit, collaborative or other nontraditional news operations preferred.
  • College degree in journalism, communications, or a related field preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Ability to think strategically and identify compelling stories that resonate with Delaware audiences.
  • In-depth knowledge of Delaware’s local news landscape, political dynamics, and key community issues.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, capable of building rapport with a diverse range of individuals and communities.
