The Local Journalism Initiative (LJI) is excited to announce that Karl Baker will serve as senior reporter for the new collaborative nonprofit newsroom, Spotlight Delaware.
Baker joins Spotlight Delaware with nearly a decade of experience reporting on news in the First State – initially for the The News Journal and then independently as a freelancer and a Substack publisher.
During that time, Baker has consistently found stories that challenge the power centers that exist across politics and business. He looks forward to continuing that kind of reporting into the future.
“I joined Spotlight because it aims to beef up investigative journalism in Delaware, holding our government accountable for all communities throughout the state,” Baker said.
Prior to coming to Delaware, Baker was a reporter with Bloomberg News, the Seattle Times, and APM’s “Marketplace.” Before that, he worked for more than a decade in the North Pacific commercial fishing industry, from California to Alaska.
Baker was born and raised in Seattle. He earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Washington, and a master’s in business journalism from New York University.
Spotlight Delaware will focus on covering public policy and how it affects the daily lives of Delawareans throughout the state, with a particular emphasis on communities that have not always had access to local news and information. The team is currently co-creating the Spotlight Delaware newsroom through a series of listening sessions throughout the state.
“Karl is among the most talented journalists in Delaware and has an uncanny nose for uncovering some of the state’s biggest stories,” said Spotlight Delaware Editor-in-Chief Jacob Owens. “I’m thrilled that he will help to lead our newsroom from the start.”
Reach Baker at kb****@sp***************.org or by phone or on Signal at 302.867.1528.
